English II - CultEx: Writing #2

Writing #2

Writing #2:  This assignment is your further exploration of your topic and is designed to focus and develop your initial response through a review of existing criticism of your focus text.

“There is then creative reading as well as creative writing. When the mind is braced by labor and invention, the page of whatever book we read becomes luminous with manifold allusion. Every sentence is doubly significant, and the sense of our author is as broad as the world.”

 ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

What should it include?

A clarified, synthesized idea of your focus on your text at this point, given my feedback, your peers’ feedback and your further thought on your text.

A comment on the process of researching.

A summary of each of your four informational texts that you have read closely, annotated, and understood well.  These should be complete but concise.

A refinement of your thinking about your focus text, especially in light of the informational texts. Consider any or all of the following questions:

  • Which pieces were most interesting or helpful to you?

  • Did anything surprise you or challenge your preconceptions?
  •   How has your thinking about the text been affected?
  • How have you refined your thinking about the text since Writing #1?
  • This discussion should include details such as quotes from the book and the informational texts that support or alter your
exploration of ideas or elements of the text.  Show me that you engaged with the research.  Your discussion must be
analytical in nature, but you may ask questions or explore ideas; you need not make definitive conclusions.

  •   A Works Cited page

What form should it take?

  • Roughly 750-1000 words typed, double-spaced.

  • Share with me via and bring in hard copies for each member of your writing group. (Groups will be smaller
      next round.)

  • Informal in style and form—this is a conversational think piece, not a formal essay.  It will not be graded for language or
form but simply on its completeness and thoughtfulness.
