AP Capstone: Research: First Day! August 16, 2019

Welcome!

Welcome to AP Research! I am so excited to start this journey with you...just a little bit late. I'm in San Francisco for my son's wedding, but will be back next week to talk all things Research. Meanwhile, I have just a few things for you to do to get you started.

After joining Google Classroom,

  • we'll to start with a small experiment to get us in the mindset of research (below, Activity #1)
  • watch a short TED Talk, about which you'll talk and write a little (Activity #2)
  • take a short survey to help me get to know you and start planning for how to help you this year (Activity #3)
  • read your assignment for Tuesday on Google classroom (join code: o5eadsg)

Have a great first day--here and all day, and I'll look forward to joining the conversation next Tuesday.

Activity #1: Bread and Baggies Experiment

Before doing this experiment, join our Google Classroom page with this code: o5eadsg

For this experiment, you will need:

  • an unopened loaf of bread
  • labeled baggies
  • tape
  • plastic gloves

Procedure:

Select one person to create a "control" baggie: he or she will put plastic gloves, open the loaf of bread, remove a slice, place the slice in the baggie labeled "Control," seal the baggie and tape it to the white board under the Control heading

Select a second person to create a "washed hands" baggie: he or she will go wash his/her hands, then take a slice of bread from the loaf, place it (gently) between the palms of their hands (without squishing, just enough to have touched the surface of the bread with as much palm as possible), place the touched slice in the baggie labeled "Washed Hands," seal the baggie and tape it to the white board under the Washed Hands heading

Select a third person, who has not washed his or her hands since coming to school, to create an "unwashed hands" baggie: he or she will take a slice of bread from the loaf, place it (gently) between the palms of their hands (as above for Person Two, without squishing, just enough to have touched the surface of the bread with as much palm as possible), place the touched slice in the baggie labeled "Unwashed Hands," seal the baggie and tape it to the white board under the Unwashed Hands heading.

Once you've done that, complete the Bread Baggies assignment in Google Classroom

Activity #2:The Happiness Advantage

Watch the video once, then look at this assignment and watch the video a second time; complete it during class today to prepare for discussion on Tuesday.

Activity #3: What's On Your Mind?

And last, but not at all least, complete this survey to help me get to know you and to start planning for how to help you be successful in this course.
