Activity #1: Bread and Baggies Experiment

Before doing this experiment, join our Google Classroom page with this code: o5eadsg

For this experiment, you will need:

  • an unopened loaf of bread
  • labeled baggies
  • tape
  • plastic gloves

Procedure:

Select one person to create a "control" baggie: he or she will put plastic gloves, open the loaf of bread, remove a slice, place the slice in the baggie labeled "Control," seal the baggie and tape it to the white board under the Control heading

Select a second person to create a "washed hands" baggie: he or she will go wash his/her hands, then take a slice of bread from the loaf, place it (gently) between the palms of their hands (without squishing, just enough to have touched the surface of the bread with as much palm as possible), place the touched slice in the baggie labeled "Washed Hands," seal the baggie and tape it to the white board under the Washed Hands heading

Select a third person, who has not washed his or her hands since coming to school, to create an "unwashed hands" baggie: he or she will take a slice of bread from the loaf, place it (gently) between the palms of their hands (as above for Person Two, without squishing, just enough to have touched the surface of the bread with as much palm as possible), place the touched slice in the baggie labeled "Unwashed Hands," seal the baggie and tape it to the white board under the Unwashed Hands heading.

Once you've done that, complete the Bread Baggies assignment in Google Classroom
